making the prospects a for yoga trainer quite bright, says Our Career Counselor

Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss recently announced his plans to introduce yoga in schools, to fight rising obesity among middle-class youngsters. He said,“Yoga can go along way in reducing such diseases as hypertension, diabetes. It should be made mandatory in all schools.” Health officials are meeting education bureaucrats to outline a plan to introduce health as a subject in schools at the earliest.

With this announcement, there’s bound to be a demand for good yoga teachers and it would be the right time to choose this as your profession. Not only will you remain fit and healthy, but also play a vital role in developing the future generation. Training for being an instructor is a process that should be carried out in authentic centres only. Unfortunately, however, since this is still an unorganised sector, there has been a mushroom growth of incompetent training centres. While there are very few institutes that are renowned,Kaivalyadhama at Lonavla is one of the very few recognised institutes (by Government of India) for imparting yoga education to school teachers and NGO instructors.“The Ministry of HRD has asked us to act at National/ State level as a nodal agency to impart yoga education. We have been given the task of creating a network of yoga institutions and conducting periodic workshops. Also we have permanent recognition from National Council for Teachers Education for our Diploma in yoga education,” said Subodh Tiwari, administrator, Kaivalyadhama.

Established way back in 1924 by Swami Kuvalayananda, the institute today has international recognition not only for its training but also for Philosophico– Literary Research in yoga. The G.S. College of Yoga which is recognised by the Central and Maharashtra Government as a Research institute conducts numerous courses. Certificate Course in Yogic Culture (six weeks) is devised for those who are not satisfied by mere technical knowledge of Yoga and are eager to know more about its philosophical and psychological background, as well as why and how it affects the body and mind. Diploma Course in Yoga Education is of nine months duration is devised for those who have an interest and aptitude for teaching Yoga to others, while the Diploma in Yoga Therapy is for the medical doctors who are interested in holistic approach and want to use Yoga as a complementary system to conventional treatment.

Explaining the potential for yoga teachers, Subodh Tiwari said“TheUGC has granted Rs.20 lakh to universities in order to establish a yoga department in the universities/colleges. Of this Rs.10 lakh would be spent on the salaries. CBSE is introducing six months yoga training in all its schools and we have been given the responsibility to execute it. Also the government wants to depute a gents and lady teacher to each of the 540 Navdya Vidyalayas. We will also need well-trained teachers. So the potential is tremendous, only one has to take a decision on entering the field.”

Kaivalyadhama is also organizing the 5thInternational Conference on Advances in Yoga Research, Education and Therapy from 28thto 31stof December 2006.  Also if you are working as a teacher inMaharashtra then you can be“On Duty” leave and attend the conference as the Government of Maharashtra, Department of Higher Education has already issued an order for the same.
