Studying Homoeopathy In India
Homoeopathy falls back on the dictum ‘Any substance capable of producing a disease is also capable of
curing it, if given a small dose to the patient’. Prachi Rege finds out that today, many people have an inclination towards homeopathic treatment, thereby fuelling the demand for qualified homeopaths
Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German scientist, founded homoeopathy in 1796; and this field of medicine has a rich history to boast of.“Homoeopathy is a philosophy in itself,” says Dr Rajesh Shah, Director, Foundation for Homoeopathic Research (FHR), who has been practising and teaching homoeopathy for the past 22 years. It is based on the Law of Similars that states,“Any substance capable of producing disease is also capable of curing, if consumed in a small dose,” explains Dr Shah. More recently, homoeopathy has also come to be known as‘alternative’ medicine, as it poses as an alternative to the otherwise popular allopathic medicine.
Eligibility
The basic qualification required to enrol for a Homeopathy course is a HSC (Science) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as your main subjects. The course is called Bachelor In Homoeopathic Medicine And Surgery (BHMS) and spans for around five-and-a-half years followed by a one-year internship under a homoeopathy specialist. There are over 160 institutes offering courses in Homoeopathy all over India.“This is a truth unknown to many youngsters,” informs Dr Shah.
“If one wants to practise abroad, then Europe and some parts of North America would be a good option,” advises Dr Shah. However for this, one has to appear for certain entrance test to be selected by a university and then after one-and-a-half years of study one can begin practice. After completing this five-year course, students can go further to pursue their Master’s degree (MD).
Options galore
After finishing the course, there are a number of options that a homoeopathy student can choose to perform. Homoeopaths are designated as physicians, who practice just like the mainstream doctors. Homeopaths can treat anything from hair loss to joint problems to tonsils and skin and hair problems.
Homeopaths can also opt for research, Like any other scientific field, one can opt for research as there is a lot of scope for delving into the depths of this science.“Several research projects are carried out across the globe,” confirms Dr Shah.“This is specifically done to put it on par with allopathy,” he adds.
The third and responsible option is education; if you are an experienced doctor and would like to pass on your virtue one can get attached to institutes as professors.
Remuneration
“The money in this profession depends upon one’s effort and capability as a doctor,” says Dr Shah. Your earning will depend on the area in which you practice and the fees you charge your patients. Speciality clinics charge anywhere between Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 for a years treatment. A private practioner can charge in the range of Rs 70 to Rs 200 for an eight to 15 day treatment.
Future prospects
“Right from the Queen of England to Amitabh Bachchan at home are users of homoeopathy medicine,” proclaims Dr Shah whose patients constitute Hrithik Roshan and the Ambanis. Looking at this, one can estimate the scope that this profession constitutes. Online homoeopathic treatment is also a new phenomenon many doctors have plunged considering the recent bent towards the new media.
So if you do not make the cut through the medical entrance test or get crunched in the reservation fracas, and have the passion for cure then homeopathy could be the right medicine.
